Shout out – Ruth McGill

This is a regular series of shout outs, to bellow about women I admire and am inspired by. Some of them I know, some I don’t but in their own ways they have touched my heart. I hope you’ll click on their links to find out more about them.

I first met Ruth McGill a couple of years ago at a week long theatre workshop led by Annie Ryan of Corn Exchange Theatre company in Dublin. Ruth took an afternoon to give us a singing lesson and we played with rounds and harmonies and sounds. She was funny, quirky and she had the voice of an angel.

I encountered her talent as an actor and singer a few months later when I saw her play in The Dead, a operatic reinterpretation of the James Joyce short story. She was versatile, present and, that voice, it was a delight to listen to her. A year later I was at another of Annie’s workshops and this time Ruth led us in a song I had heard for years at my yoga class but which I never knew the words to. We connected over song, performance and yoga. It has been a delight to follow her progress as a performer over the past couple of years and watch her grace the main Dublin stages.

Ruth is also a member of the group The Evertides, a trio of musicians who recently released their first EP. Along with Alma Kelliher and Ruth Smith, they write beautiful songs which capture story and melody with such grace and ease. Their close harmonies and gorgeous instrumentation are just a balm to the soul.

As well as acting, singing and performing, Ruth is a qualified yoga instructor and mother to a son, so you could say, she has her hands rather full but one of the reasons I wanted to introduce her to you was for her latest venture.

While I might feel the need to hide under a duvet at the stuff on the news these days, Ruth’s got a better idea. She’s decided we all need to experience one thing of beauty every day. With this in mind, she went looking for a website to connect with and, finding nothing, she made her own.

Just One Beautiful Thing is a daily post of something inspirational, be it a poem, a story or a piece of music. It’s that couple of moments of peace we all need in the day to pause, reset and be reminded that whatever crazy stuff is happening out there in the big, bad world, connecting with something beautiful is healing. It reminds us not to give up hope, to choose to see with an open heart and to remember that abundance is everywhere.

Thank you Ruth, for being a consistent light worker both on stage and off. Thank you for sharing your childlike joy and wonder with us all. I look forward to your next beautiful thing!
